University Centre for Regional Studies and Analyses

The University Centre for Regional Studies and Analysis (CRSA) was established as part of the scientific programme “Dialogue in the Socio-economic Environment, Regional Studies and Sustainable Development,” an integral component of the project University Complex for Humanities “Alma Mater” (Research Fund of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science under Contract No. DUNK01-1/22.12.2009). In 2015, the Centre for Regional Studies and Analysis was administratively incorporated into the Faculty of History at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. Between 2010 and 2016, within the framework of the scientific programme “Dialogue in the Socio-economic Environment, Regional Studies and Sustainable Development” and under the auspices of the “Regional Programme” at the Alma Mater University Complex for Humanities, the team of the Centre for Regional Studies and Analysis actively participated in project activities, including academic conferences, seminars, and publications.

On 25 January 2023, by decision of the Academic Council of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, the centre was transformed into the University Centre for Regional Studies and Analysis.

The aim of the Centre for Regional Studies and Analysis (CRSA) is to research and analyse various aspects of the past and present of the Balkan and Asia Minor region, as well as neighbouring areas, within the context of bilateral relations. The Centre has its own research and analysis programme and will endeavour to attract graduates of Sofia University with relevant language skills.

The objectives of the CRSA focus on research and analysis of events, processes, individuals, and phenomena related to South-Eastern Europe and its neighbouring European and non-European regions. The main emphasis is placed on what can conventionally be described as Zeitgeschichte, i.e., “Contemporary History.” Naturally, depending on the specific topic of research, excursions into the Early Modern period are possible and, in many cases, necessary.

The CRSA will organise academic research, conferences, public and training seminars related to issues concerning “South-Eastern Europe” in both regional and interregional contexts. One of the principal tasks of the CRSA is to become a centre for regional expertise in the fields of politics, history, economics, social and interconfessional relations, and more. The Centre will seek out interested parties and will actively offer its research and expert opinions to state institutions, non-governmental organisations, businesses, and other academic units.
