At the invitation of the University Center for Regional Studies and Analyses (UCRSA), on 11 December 2024, H.E. Haralambos Kafkarides, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cyprus to the Republic of Bulgaria, delivered a public lecture entitled “Cyprus, History and Strategic Developments in the Eastern Mediterranean”. ????????
In his presentation, Ambassador Kafkarides provided a retrospective overview of key moments in the modern history of the Republic of Cyprus and emphasized the country’s strategic position within the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. He highlighted the Government’s efforts to reach a solution to the Cyprus issue through the establishment of a “bi-zonal, bi-communal federation” and presented the perspectives of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
An engaging discussion followed, involving students and faculty members from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. A wide range of topics were addressed, including the referendum on the Annan Plan in 2004, the dialogue between Cyprus and the European Union, Cyprus’s position on the Middle East conflict, and the historical relations between Cyprus and Israel.
We extend our sincere gratitude for the interest shown in the lecture and, above all, to Ambassador Kafkarides for graciously accepting our invitation!
